In 2004 we accepted our very first final year medical student who wished to spend her 6 week medical elective placement with us at Nkhotakota. It was a great success so we opened our doors and the numbers of medical students coming to experience medicine in the bush with just basic tools has increased over the years; in 2016 we received 40 students. As a medical student with us you will taught basic Chichewa and gain real “hands on” experience in the practise of tropical medicine. It is a continued success and many describe it as “the greatest experience of their lives”.

WMF revolves around providing mobile clinics to rural villages in the Nkhotakota region of Malawi. Each day medical students and local clinical officers would get into the 4×4 and head off to a new village where we’d be greeted by hundreds of mothers and their children. Our main job was to then, with the basic Chichewa we were taught on arrival at WMF, speak to the Mothers and examine the child to work out a differential diagnosis. Thursdays were spent on site at WMF seeing and treating children with HIV. Great experience for anyone interested in paediatrics or rural healthcare and its provision.

We work in the world’s remote areas. Our current focus is Malawi where we have been working since 1997. Our work has also touched the D.R.C. and Angola

Wherever we work in the world, our focus is on children as they are often the most neglected when it comes to healthcare

We are a small organisation and truly welcome help in any shape or form. If you have any special skills such as in IT, law, marketing, fundraising – or anything that could be of use to us, we will be so grateful if you can help.Do make contact with us and ask any questions you wish.

Are you inspired to help children receive much needed medical attention? Are you social media savvy? We could use your skills in order to help us bring medical care to children in rural Nkhotakota District. As an online volunteer you can work remotely and contribute to our mission from anywhere in the world! This role is indispensable to our efforts as it allows us to engage supporters and raise awareness of the work we do. We need people like you in order to reach to as many children as possible.

The greatest improvement to the quality of life for children is access to quality medical care, ending suffering and saving lives.
