A typical case study
A report from our Chief Clinical Officer on a mobile clinic visit.
Her sister in-law returned around 10 o’clock and reminded her that it was the day for WMF’s mobile clinic routine visit at the nearest village - She started off immediately.
When I examined the child, I could hardly arouse her from her unconscious state and she only responded to a painful stimulus. Her body temperature was over 40 degrees celcius and she was close to death. An single intramuscular injection of Quinine brought the child back to a conscious state within an hour and after 4 hours during her second Quinine dose the fever was completely down and the child fully awake.
As we left the clinic 6 hours later the child was fully conscious and playing around. We offered a course of oral Quinine to take at home and advised the Village Health volunteers to keep a close eye on the child. During the next visit the VHV reported that the child was now in excellent health.
Jenifer Manda had been well until this morning when the mother, after going through her morning domestic duties found the child perspiring where she had left her comfortably sleeping. She felt her forehead it was quite hot. She called to the baby, the baby just looked at her with wide open eyes. She lifted the baby from the mat and the child started convulsing. Her husband had left to the district trading centre 50 kilometres from her home to sell some locally made mats to raise money for the family. She called for her sister in-law, but she was not there. Her mother in-law stayed a kilometre from where they lived. She had no money for bus fare to the district hospital. She decided to stay in and wait.
Without our intervention Jenifer would have died within hours.
