Support us in our vital work
July 2007 - WMF Children's Mobile Operating theatre impounded in Mozambique.
The vehicle finally arrived at our base at Nkhotakota on the evening of Friday 27th July. The seizure of the vehicle in Mozambique meant that the journey from Durban which should have taken 5 - 6 days actually took over 4 weeks.
Now the work can begin.
Latest news - day 7.
The vehicle has been released and has already reached Lilongwe, Malawi's capital city - our team sent this message "We are home, the nightmare is over".
It took an immense amount of hard work, persuasion and cajoling - most of it behind the scenes.
Latest news - day 4.
Our team has spent the last 3 complete days waiting at the head of Customs office trying to get the vehicle released without any success. We continue to work behind the scenes.
Day 1
Despite having all the correct documentation, carnet de passage and insurance - Mozambique customs have seized our vehicle.
The vehicle (pictured above with the proud team who carried out the conversion from army truck to mobile operating theatre) was being driven from Durban in South Africa up to Malawi to begin its vital work and part of the journey was unavoidably through Mozambique - as we entered the country our team was told that the vehicle was being impounded and that they had to continue their journey by bus.
Our two drivers, Country director and Chief Clinical Officer are now stuck in Mozambique's capital city Maputo.
We are exploring all avenues, leaving no stone unturned to obtain its release
